Here is a video of paddling just after the crest. Water was at 43 feet and change at the Valley Park gauge.

Now that was really strange.

Assuming that it would have been totally unsafe to get anywhere near the main river channel?

Yes, the main channel was very fast. Two factors made it unsafe in my opinion.

1. Lots of debris to dodge.
2. With fast current, its easy to get pinned against a tree entering and exiting the channel and flip.

Link to paddle on Sunday 5/7/17 as the waters are on their way back down https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10209286868789881&type=1&l=54aafa1aac
