On a very sad note, the paddling world lost a great guy on Sunday, our fellow competitor and friend Gary Kingham...

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/2017/01/23/authorities-release-id-ka...

To my fellow paddlers:
Please wear your PFD (life jacket) and consider proper attire for immersion not just for air temperature comfort out of water...especially after the recent thaw when the water is as frigid and hovering in the mid 30's. Heat loss is 20 times faster when submerged in cold water versus heat loss due to air temperature. For those who paddle surfskis make it a regular practice to use your leg leash.

The tragic loss of Gary is one too many. Paddle safely!

Sad and tragic for the family, friends, and the sport.  The story in The Des Moines Register paints a very nice portrait of a man anyone would have been proud to know and call a friend.  Prayers to all and God speed.

Completely agree.  He was a great ambassador and extremely kind to those in the paddling community.  Great example of a fierce competitor who paddled hard but a gentleman all the way.  Will be sorely missed.

Terribly sad and shocking. What are the recommendations for cold water padding clothing?
