THE FIRECRACKER

August 20th, 2016

It is that time again…the second annual FIRECRACKER canoe, kayak and SUP race on the Mississippi River (Alton Slough in the St. Louis region).  This is a looped race on an calm backwater bay with a 10 mile canoe and kayak race and a 4 mile SUP race.

In addition to the main races, we will also have a shorter youth race in the afternoon and we will even have loaner SUP boards for kids to use on the youth race or adults to try out later in the day.

Cool option for this year…We have gotten permission for primitive camping at the race venue (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers/Audubon office at Riverlands).  So feel free to come in the night before and hang out around a fire at the pavilion and then get lots of river time on Saturday.  Camping will be simple primitive-type camping in a designated area, but there will be restrooms and a sheltered central pavilion to hang out with fellow paddlers.

Weather got us in the afternoon last year…but this year we are hoping to create a day of racing, youth event and time for just loafing around on the water.  This is an ideal site, as the main current of the river does not affect the race/camping site.

There are also plenty of hotels in Alton IL just across the river along with  restaurant’s in the historic down town district.

More information and registration can be found at

www.firecrackerrace.org

Breaking news.....we just got the donation of several voyager canoes to use for the firecracker race (thanks to Mike Clark with bigmuddy adventures http://2muddy.com/)

These boats can hold around 10-15 paddlers and are fun AND fast.  We already have two full boats racing this year for bragging rights....and now have additional boats for folks to register and then show up, get in and race.  This will be fun and a great way to get a taste for racing without having to bring your own boat.

Its a 10 mile looped course in a sheltered bay above the Alton Lock and Dam and so it will be spectator friendly (and a spectical!).

More information on how to register for a seat in one of these big boats will be available in a couple of days.

For those of you who want to race your own rig...we have divisions for canoe, kayak and SUP...so come and have fun and get ready to do a little wake riding of the big boats as you hammer your way to victory

Fellow paddle addicts:

FIRECRACKER RACE August 20th in Saint Louis Region (Alton Pool on Mississippi River)

If you are gonna do this fun race....its time to register.  We really need folks to register in advance due to the logistics of assigning folks to the open voyager boats and avoiding a crush of registration at the event the morning.

We will take day of event registration...but, idealy folks can do this now.

Also note:  We will organize a short youth race right after lunch...no registration required for that...but we will need a waiver and $5 insurance cost for those folks.  If you plan to have a paddler do the youth race ...let me know here, so I can get a feel for numbers of kids racing.

Here is the webpage

look forward to seeing you all there!!!!  Smiley

Ron,
Are you going to have any V8 Pro's there?  Would love to take one of those for a spin.

Is camping only available for Friday? Just wondering if Saturday night was also an option.

I don't think it will be a problem as long as you keep it low key...there are not formal campgrounds at this site....it's a special allowance just for the race

OK...weather looks rainy for race day.  Not a bad thing in summer, 80 degrees and rain can actually be great...but, I love to paddle in the rain, so perhaps I am not normal.

My question is this....would folks still come and get wet??  It will still be warm and for me like jumping in puddles when I was a kid (like just last week).

Or should we start to consider a rescheduled race date (likely the first part of September).

Your thoughts???

This morning's TV forecast in St. Louis called predicted rain Saturday, clear and nice Sunday, so a 50/50 weekend. Forecast did not call for heavy thunderstorms / lightning, so hope the weather folks are right!

Race IS ON

we still look to have some rain...but I like paddling in the rain.

Weather Happens

Let do this and be ready for some fun in the outdoors.  It will not be cold, but bring rain gear and perhaps a long sleeve shirt and tights to race in

LETS DO THIS

We have selected our date for the third annual Firecracker canoe, kayak and SUP ..and Voyager race.

July 22nd, 2017

Mark your calendars and either jump in a voyager canoe for a mad throw down (the voyager boats will be provided...just jump in and paddle hard)...or bring your own canoe, kayak or SUP.

Looped 10 mile race (3 miles for SUP) in a NACSCAR like racing venue....very spectator and family friendly.

Got to throw in my two cents.  Bryan runs a fantastic race and it is a total blast!  The loops are fun, the turns are wicked and well the weather....let's just say Bryan has some great mojo!

Come the night before, camp and enjoy the sunset.  Then get up on Saturday and be ready to blow it out!

Definitely on my calendar for 2017.
