Just in case you haven't realized yet, The Gritty is no longer "The Gritty Fifty".  It has been reduced to 33 miles, AND there is no damn portage.

The reason?  Attendance has been low in the last few years before I took over this race.  To get it back up, I felt we needed to differentiate it a bit and make it more appealing.  We have a lot of long races to choose from, so I shortened it.  Eliminating the Damn is better for many folks and for a safety standpoint.  With the race in late May, the water should be real good, and you don't have to worry about hurting boats.  We don't need to have a safety boat, and we don't do shirts at this one, so we save some money and pass that onto you.

$30 for early registration
Free for anyone under 18
Free meal (like all of my races)
Awards for all.

Oh, did I mention we have a former Olympian who just signed up?  Come paddle a cheap race, eat for free, and witness a true athlete and great ambassador for the sport.

Hey everyone,

I know a lot of you have said you're coming, but the roster isn't very big.

Please make sure you sign up so I can order enough prizes and food.

Thanks, Joe

Looking like the water level might stay at a good level. Maybe some brave sole will try out the iron solo boat of Dark horse

If the water stays high....around 10+ feet at Desoto gage...I am in.  I dont have a boat that I am willing to walk down the Kaw with right now...so if it drops lower I am out....the Kaw has eaten too many of my boats.

It is high right now...but predicted to drop.  Lets hope for some rain middle of next week.

Mike, is that thing even paddle-able?  I can't wait to see it!

Good to hear Bryan!

I have updated the roster on MPR.  In the meantime, I will continue to sing to the rain gods.

No lack of water especially after the rain last night. The Kaw spiked and is just over 40,000 CFS with gauge height of 15.82 ft. Rain forecasted throughout the week from Tuesday through Saturday.

Joe yes it is and will say it is the fastest Aluminum canoe I have been in. I think I would call it a metal Canoeyak. It will scoot right along with a double blade single foam seat in the middle. Warning though you need to deck that boat for any waves over 12 inches water is coming in with no flotation I think it would end up on the bottom. Smiley

Any South Dakota folks coming for this race?   If so, pm me.
I may be able to help with gas if you are able to haul an extra boat home.

Thanks

First time paddling on the Kaw coming up this weekend.  We know the importance of being in the channel, reading the buoys and shore markers etc. on the MO... and we certainly saw the wisdom of taking the outside of the bend! But it seems with a much shallower river it will be more about reading the water for submerged obstacles and paddling like crazy... right?
Am I missing anything?

The race is from Lawrence 8th street ramp to Edwardsville.  There is no portage at the dam as the Edwardsville ramp is abour 3/4 mile before the dam on river left.

The race begins at 9am, and the mandatory safety meeting is 8am.  Please arrive by 7:15/7:30 so you can check in.

Regarding the water level.  The Desoto gage is at 13 feet right now.  It was at 15 feet a few days ago, and it is projected to be at 13.9 feet on Saturday.  Flood stage is 26 feet.  So, the river is moving, but should not pose any higher dangers other than a bit faster and deeper water.  But nothing like the Missouri for example.

Safety is the number 1 concern.  I will continue to monitor the river and will send out any relevant updates tomorrow if need be.

The weather for Saturday is calling for cloudy skis (but no/little rain) with temps close to 70.  The Gritty is supposed to be "33 miles of Sun, Sand, and Sorrow".  The won't be much sun or sand, but the sorrow is up to you!

I predict it will be above 10 ...more like 15 race day.....will be fast and hopefully has flushed most debris out by now....would be kind to any boat.....I just got too busy (life).....will miss trying to keep Mike in sight for a bend or two until he is gone....only to be seen when he helps me out mid my boat at the ramp!!!!....set a record time Mike this is an unusual high Kaw....it will last for Very, very long time!!!!
