We paddled past it on Saturday. Unlike the google satellite imaging, there is a sand bar two thirds of the length of the island that extends about 300 feet toward the channel at times. It looked to be about three feet or so above water level.

I would say that I'd the river was at the height it is now, there will be people taking advantage of camping there if that was their race plan.

Waverly isn't a good place to sleep, if finishing the 340 is your goal. 
Make it to Hill's Island, where safety boats will have a fire going.  Take a nap without a train alarm waking you every half hour.
There is always a game group on the Island night 1.  And this year it appears that there is a lot of room!
