I was wondering if anyone had ideas or opinions on the following; I built a kayak over the summer, 20'x17" and while I have gotten more stable in the boat, I haven't had it out much due to cold, 10 miles or so, and am concerned about stability at 2am in the 340. Would I be better off ballasting it with PVC tubes filled with water? Or outriggers as an insurance policy (ie hobie inflatable that can be thrown in the hatch when not in use)? Is there something I can build that would have a minimal effect on efficiency?
I will have plenty of training in the boat before hand but I am worried that won't be enough to remain stable 24 hours into the race.

Thoughts?

Maybe sponsons. Here is a thread from paddle24seven that talks a bit about it. http://paddle24seven.com/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=82&func=view&id=1... They will add some secondary stability without mortgaging speed. These will not make the canoe as stable as outriggers, but they will add a lot of stability.

Oh, and do not add balast. If you go that route, just lower the seat.

Sponsons are great. However, if you want to create a very good outrigger that you can easily store away within your boat, email me and I will send you instructions on how to create a very efficient and storable outrigger.

My current design Stratus 18 may not be so tippy but 40 hours into the race I really might like some stability insurance of my own. could you send me a copy of your outrigger instructions? All help is appreciated. a p p l e-54@kc.rr.com just remove the spaces.

No problem. I'll try to get the instructions to you within the next couple of hours. I found the instruction online. A fisherman who enjoys fishing on the sea in his kayak created the outrigger and posted the instructions. I followed the easy instructions and the outrigger has proven to be extremely durable and storable.
