Perche Creek Gutbuster 3rd edition will be March 24. Three new classes-solo surfski, USCA c1 and Adult/Youth. 11 classes total.
This year certain classes will be designated M&M-Mix and Match, male or female will race together. If there are enough participants it can be divided. Adult/Youth is age 13-17 and one adult 30 or over. Adult will be determined by age only, no further proof will be needed. 1st-3rd place prizes, drawing for goodies after race, first 75 who enter will get goody bag with stuff(to be determined later) Complimentary snacks and drinks from the resident race hosts.

I was at Providence on Sunday climbing some awesome new routes and noticed that the Perche was eyeballing me. She looked scared at first. then she must have realized i didnt have my boat with me because she was talking trash as soon as i hit the trail and started to walk away. I prefer sport climbing in the cold, versus double blading by myself. Seems many of the local paddlers are scared to paddle in the cooler months Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Remember sport climbing is neither.

Charlie, im really looking forward to your Gutbuster!!!!!!!!!!!! i can hardly wait.

Hey Charlie, Any chance you would consider dropping the minimum age for this race? My daughter would love to do this race with me but she just turned 8 yrs.

I am quite confident she could hold her own and even pull her old man some. We did your Generations race, and the Kawlloween last year when she was 7. We managed a 3rd place in the mixed tandem on the Kawlloween. We have been on the Missouri together as well. She has been with me for a lot of my training.

Yes I'll open it up to lower ages and if we get other bantam paddlers I'll make a separate class. Most will run canoes and rudders will be allowed (hey its 2012 the end of the world right?) What will not be allowed is a single surfski or c1 with the child duct taped in. Needless to say a proper fitting pfd is required.

How about Velcro? Smiley
I can attest to Aleah's prowess. Her daddy was huffin and puffin at the end of the Kawlloween when she put the hammer down and dragged that old man across the finish line. Grin

My only objection to an eight year old class; is that I may loose to an eight year old.  I don't know how my self inflated male ego would stand up to that.

register andy pay day of race, starts at 11. Depending on size I may have two heats. Oh yeah bring change or a good check.
Watch your egos if you are in the surfski class, women can enter that also.

Di and I might make this- is cooper's open? That would make a great next day Cooper's to Rocheport bike and paddle back down.
BTW, I need 10 acres to turn my boat around 180 degrees, is there enough room at McBain Bridge?

if time allows for it, i will head down to JC after the race. Its a great stretch that take well under four hours an easy pace.

you could also ride the Katy from there as well or im sure i or some one could give ya ride back up there.

Charlie,

I wanted to enter a race with my son this year, however, I wanted to check with you first regarding your race rules. What is the youngest age that you will accept in the adult/youth division?
He is currently 6.

Second question; I only own solo kayaks, therefore, when we go out to the lake and paddle together, I take the lid off of the back of the storage compartment of my Epic 18 and he sits back there and we paddle together. I double blade and he uses the single blade paddle which I purchased from you.

Last year we paddled Longview Lake, Blue Springs Lake, and the Kaw together.

Would this be allowed 4 your race?

Thanks,

Traci

All participants in any tandem class have to have a legitimate tandem boat especially if paddling with a young paddler. Imagine me contacting the insurance company and telling them a 6 year old fell out of the cockpit when the kayak rolled over and got eaten by the carp. That being said, I have had several floks wanting to paddle with their child who is under 12 so I'm looking at doing a younger age group in addition to the already scheduled 12-17 group. It most likely be a shorter distance too. So hang loose for now. I do have extra canoes if you need to borrow one.

Charlie,

I absolutely see your point and I am not surprised by your answer, but I figured that it never hurts to ask.

(I have been sick for the last several days with the flu, so today is the first day that I have gotten back on this site.)

Thank you for the offer of a canoe. I believe that Kevin also mentioned that he might have one that I could borrow for the race. He doesn't live that far from me, so I might take him up on the offer, or I might just sign up and do it solo. Racing in a canoe is very different from racing in a kayak, you all might be waiting a long time at the finish line for us to finally come floating in. ....    Tongue

Josh, to answer your question. I have never practiced getting back into my Epic Endurance 18 with Noah. However, when Daniel (age 8 at the time) and I did a 15 mile race on the Missouri back in 2010, we used my Prijon Seayak, and we did practice self rescue multiple times at Longview Lake. It was never a problem for us to get back into the kayak, it was just a matter of working on our time and becoming faster at getting back in.  I have a water pump and 2 paddle floats, and it worked well. (I also removed the back hatch and Daniel sat behind me.) The front hatch was enough to keep the kayak afloat.

However, that was for the Missouri River, where you have to know how to get back into your boat!
On this river, with Noah, I figured if we tipped over, we would just be swimming to the shore.

Nevertheless, with that being said, nothing is faster to climb back into than a surfski.  One minute tops, and you are back in.  ..........  To bad I cant just duck tape my son to the back of my surfski and race in that!!       Smiley   Wink   Grin

ps, I am joking..........

See you all on the 24th.

Traci

Hummmmm,  I have 6 solo kayaks sitting in my garage, maybe I should breakdown and sell some of them so I can purchase a tandem....   Smiley

I have a tandem outrigger that would be perfect for you (see for sale section)....faster than any usca boat, better looking than Charlie and has a rudder which makes Charlie happy to see on any boat:)

On a serious note....water is still very cold and Perche is low....would suck to have your kid in a kayak hatch rig that gets goosed over 5 miles from ramp

Only problem with the tandem outrigger that with Perche low....turning a 24 foot boat around at the bridge might require a crane  Tongue
