I'll take a "Race Volunteer" label if you're handing 'em out.
It was truly a privilege being on the other end of the clipboard this year. I had the pleasure of seeing many of the competitors repeatedly at different checkpoints throughout the race, and it came as no surprise to me that every single paddler / crew I came in contact with was very polite and respectful towards me. But what I did find surprising was how many paddlers, even though they were in the midst of what would become one of the most profound experiences of their life, at points in the race where their will and determination were truly being tested, would pause for a few moments as they started to drift toward the next checkpoint, look me in the eyes, and said "Thank you... for everything...". Not just a quick "thank you" in passing, but a "stop what they're doing, make eye contact" genuine thanks.
If it were just a few, that would be great. But the sheer number of folks who were able to step away from the mental and physical anguish they were enduring to thank me for just a few seconds of hospitality... It really renews my faith in the human race. With all that is happening right now in our country, its easy to forget that there are still good people in the world.
This race quite literally brings out the best in people.
