It's true, the details are a bit muddy, thanks for clarifying for us Scott. Here are a few nice words that Steve sent to the crew about John that I'd love to share with folks. It was my understanding that Cap'n Brey was also planning on doing the MR340 this year, he will surely be missed. I've been sending all of my love & thoughts to his sister Jayni who is left to care for their mother and sort through the pieces. Anyways, here are a few words that Steve wrote that I thought really capture John's spirit and bring a small sense of closure:
My hope is that John has found some of the peace he was looking for. If he did indeed drown, he did it in the river that was such a huge part of his life. He’s loved and struggled with this river for many years. The wildlife, fish, plants and native inhabitants of the Missouri River were deeply woven into John’s life and he knew as much as any scientist about how they all interrelated.
Through the years, John has given so much to Missouri River Relief, and to each one of us who were his friends. From his incredible trash display to sharing his river refuge with us. From composing our boating manual to creating the Mari-Osa trash flume. His crazy laugh and wicked dry sense of humor are unforgettable.
Because we don’t know what really happened, I still hold hope that he’s going to turn up downstream after a long float of solitude on the flooding river, heading home and getting back to his life. But most of us think he took his final swim in the Big Muddy. Help keep his memory alive, friends.
