Yeah, I like reading a book when I can then easily ask the author questions.  Like the last night of the 340 last year, Christina and I asked Jeff Barrow tons of questions about his book that had recently been released "From the Bottom Up" which I highly recommend.

(Make Jeff sign it for you at the safety meeting)

So Jared, I've already got some questions for you.  And I think I can ask without really giving anything away to your future readers... but I was curious about your decision to ascend the Meramack and then take the Current rather than just stay on the Mississippi and end up in the same place.  Doubtless you had some great adventures on both rivers... I was just wondering what the thought process was in deciding that route.

The main reason we decided to travel that route was based on the fact that we would not have an opportunity to paddle an Ozark stream for several years. Also, had we paddled right down the Miss. we would have hit the Gulf coast in late summer and might of had to dodge hurricanes.
Climbing the Meremac was a tough challenge, but was very rewarding. First of all, you will learn more about a river going up it once, over paddling down it 10 times. Also, climbing that river forced us to develope skills and strength that would later save our lives many fold. Lastly, it was a good excuse to spend several weeks of the brutally hot summer paddling two of my favorite cool clear Ozark streams. Cool

Jared,
I just finished your book.  It was excellent and I highly recommend it.  I got it Wed and finished it Thur.  My bathroom renovation had to wait for me to follow you for 8000 miles by book...if you meet my wife you are in for it as I blamed you for getting me sidetracked.  You really captured the nitty gritty of such a trip that most of us would never consider.  I know telling others about how it felt to do the MR340 is impossible. I bet you really have a hard time conveying this trip to non-adventure minded people...but you can just point them to your well written book.

I will be bugging you for an autograph in it when we meet Wink Wink

I just got back from an FAA seminar in San Diego. I was able to get a paddle in on Mission Bay yesterday afternoon. Click on the link below to see the pics. I didn't get great pics of them but there was a couple of sea lions that were diving for fish about 20 feet from my kayak. All I got was a couple of shots of thier fins and backs. There's also pics of the seals at Lajolla Beach, and surfers at Sunset Cliffs....and a bunch of other stuff.

I thought I had a safety light....must have washed off. I did have a clay pot on my stern! I lost a kayakking friend last year. Doug always wanted to do the river at 10 feet over the bridge, but knew he'd never get the necessary skills. He used to tell me he wanted me to take him. So I got his ashes at the funeral and was given "the mission".
Kind of Odd that on the MWA calendar, February was the month devoted to our lost friends, and the river came up to exactly 10 feet over D- not one inch off!
Doug and I had one cool ride! We said goodbye at D bridge at silvermines. I had to get home and he decided to go on to New Orleans......
