what..tell me it is not true >:(....some one stole my number :o...the number I have on every race boat I own.....a number I have used for several 340's.....1313.....lucky 13......second boat in last year...and the number has been so easily swiped, how could this happen...........oh the horror.........a pox on "left handed monkey whatevers"......bad karma, bad juju and evil hippy dippy and I curse you monkey paddlers with a good case of head lice.....and swine flu to boot (joke 8-))

rats and double rats......................................................Ok...Scott...how about 131313....did I mention the number 1313 is already on my think EVO..which is likely to be my ride.....for that matter 1313 is on my Epic V10...and on my Outrigger...and on my QCC and ...............................................you get the point ::)

Ok seriously ;) how about1818 .....a little bit of black duck tape should work to convert the 1313 on the boat to that???

if that is taken....I am gonna drop out....not just from the race ...but from society in general...............................................ok......maybe it is not that big a deal......then again.....it was my number.....did I mention it is on my boats already.....my house number is 1313......is there no justice....I have 1313 tatoo'd on my _____________....oh the pain........................................................ ::)

ok shallow breaths...calm down....think calm thoughts......yoga tommorow for sure...(note to self.....back off the 8th cup of coffee past 5 pm)

WOW that sure is a lot of Missouri paddlers. Im excited to see so many boats registered this early. All i could think about at midnight on new years eve was paddling.  And iwas thinking about what my boat number should be...sure am glad i got the one i wanted. I couldn't find the right registration form though. I clicked the scroll bar and didn't see the motorboat division. Oh well I guess I paddle agian. Hope everyone has good race this year.

Hopkins,

So sorry about your number.  When that entry came in, I knew you'd be saddened.  But alas, you had not yet entered.  You were sitting comfortably on that fence.  Waiting for a nudge either way.  Feel free to negotiate with those Left Handed Monkeys.

PS,  The sign of a true hard core racer is a boat covered and re-covered in numbers from races gone by.

PPS,  Even Michael Jordan switched to number 45 for his post Bulls career.

Scott: Can I have my old number back from last year.  I have not seen it listed, if taken that is OK, but I registered with 0888.  Would like that one again.  Let me know if I can help to the pre event.  Colin (son), he will be back from Phoenix late January and we will be working out until then.  Wish the best and still like the Spencer with my modifications.

I changed you to 0888.  Glad you like the Spencer Xtreme.  I think you got the second to last one at KCPaddler.

Ok Scott.......1818 has been taken...................ok....here goes....the year of my birth........1964

please please tell me that one will work...a quick look and I did not see it on there...............and beside if you:

Divide that by two
Subtract 82
Add the gestation cycle of a green river newt
Divide by the days in the year that Dan wears a kilt.....................................it is exactly 13........ha take that left handed, one arm paddling furry primate, stinky monkey boys.......................................................oh come on I am just kidding...its all about love...................group hug everyone. :-*

Bryan, changed you to 1964.  If you were a Ford Mustang, you'd be valuable.

Matt, you are now 0008.   CClement, do I have your veteran status correct?  Let me know.

Well, heck..... I don't mind telling you guys it's going to be hell trying to get a partner for tandem, most of my friends have heard about last year and won't get near me and a boat at the same time.  What are the odds there will be an opening in Men's Solo?

Go put your name on the list (registration form) and it should work out.  We always have dozens of drops and switches to tandem.

Paddlephiles,

Saw your post about Moz.  Yeah, he should either enter or join me on a safety boat and get back on the river.  The raft set sail 21 years ago this August.  WAY back in 1989.  (Yes, there was a Missouri River back then.  But there were no Asian Carp.)

In many ways, that raft trip is the strand of DNA that started the 340.  And if you think paddling a canoe at night is scary, try a 1000 pound 11X16 raft.  We had to start positioning for a bridge about 2 miles upstream.  But, we could walk around and even play cards fairly easily.

I don't know about a moment of clairvoyance, but I do know we ran out of drinking water between Miami and Glasgow.  We were reduced to drinking the stagnant ice melt out of the cooler.  With bits of ham floating around in it.  As repulsive as it sounds, the Ham Water was guarded carefully and each of the four of us was watched close to make sure no extra sips were taken.  Finally, a hike into Brunswick was necessary.  We tied the raft near the mouth of the Grand and sniffed our way to fresh water.  And after returning to the raft at dusk, set out on the now famous night journey to Glasgow.

Good times for sure.  Tell Matt to come along and bring his guitar.

Scott

Scott,

Please change our number from 1313 to 2311.  I would rather not get the the pox, bad karma, bad juju, evil hippy dippy nor the curse of a good case of head lice or swine flu boots!!!  When we bought the boat from Bryan several months ago it already had the number on it.  So I took the shortest route and registered that number.  I guess I didn't realize Bryan's emotional attachment to the number  ;) and am happy to take a new number if Bryan would kindly remove the above said curses on The Left Handed Nuclear Monkeys from Space!   :)

Very Much Looking Forward to the Race!

Heck, it's exciting.  I'm excited.  It's such relief to have the guns go off and see everyone round that bend and get through the bridges.  We have such great volunteers and safety boat crews... everyone has experience now and knows how to make it work.  River Relief is a sharp group of folks who have come along and allowed us to grow this thing.  Their boats and volunteers are top notch.  I look forward to any excuse to hang out with them and the race is a great one.

We are looking at a fast river this year, I'll bet.  We've got snow everywhere in the watershed and more on the way.  I expect floods in the spring and early summer.  Hopefully we'll be below flood stage come late July with good weather and moonlit nights.  Another good year with everyone taking care of business out there as well as of each other.

Im have always been impressed with Rivermiles Events. They go all out. Every racer gets treated the same. Whether your in it to win, or in it to finsh. Very impressive!

You guys have made such a huge impact on my life i cant even explain. I think im like the majority of people who use this site and partake your events. With that being said i never paddled further than forty five miles in a trip before my first 340. This sport or more specifically this event has giving me new goals.

Ive been rock climbing for over 15 years avidly, ok well obsesively. I did my first 340 to train for climbing. Now i climb to train for paddling. Your events and  this site have taught me so much. The things that ive learned belong in Hopkins new thread. Karin and Scott you seem like good friends to me even though you guys probly don't even remember me.(how many racers have you met since this thing took off) Everyone who helps with your events have made a great impact on our world. Way to go.

THANK YOU

Yeah, well, I got pictures of Matt climbing that he probably doesn't want many to see----but that never stopped me before! As the leader of the canoeler ground support team for the aquaholics, I would like to amplify on Matt's comments. I've been taking him on climbing, hiking, fishing etc adventures sent he was old enough to walk. These events are by far the most enjoyable and organized. There is always an emphasis on safety first (a must with me given I'm a Paramedic/Trauma nurse), however, no lacking of fun and down right friendship. Sure, there's always some body that takes it too seriously, but for the most part everyone involved is willing to help out anyone at any time. As before, the canoeler support team for the aquaholics extends our hands to help out-we will have first aid, coffee, Mama Canoeler's River Hash & possibly some type of single barrle small batch bourbon on hand.
YOU ARE ALL AWSOME and I will feel bad standing alone at the finish line watching our team come in first over-all this year! PADDLE LIKE A MARSUPIAL!
WOOHOO! GAME ON!

I too am a recovering climbing junkie....it was a major my obsession for years...mountaineering, sport climbing, traditional and even drove a few pins in my time...I stopped cold turkey 10 years ago when my son was born (not enough time and perhaps too much risk at the level I was into it at the time).

I put up a bunch of routes at the andromida and wilton bluff area....ever climb there????....these are the bluffs over the river near columbia.  Still have all the gear in my basement....never sees the light of day ::)

good thing I am no longer obssessed about any particular sport......................................................much.

Post by climbguru on 01/15/10 at 21:15:40
one of the best routes out there i think was yours, "traverse of my dreams" nice find. the st thomas limestone is where im at most of time. steep techy sport out there. local boulders in jeff catch me running or paddling bye as well. not that i approve of trespassing but there are some nice problems to by had on the moreau. there are a few mother load boulder fields that wont be disclosed on a forum.

Ten years ago is when i started climbing at wilton and andromeda. maybe its best we never climbed together. i have a feeling you are just as intense of a guy as i am. your son is very important but im sad to hear you stopped cold turkey b/c my first son is due on the 25thof Jan!!! I understand about the risk factor though. hopefully i wont stop cold. The risk is there especially on the big stuff in red rocks or yosemite, but everything has a risk.

I think these two sports are very closely related in many aspects. For starters you have to like hard work or you wont last past the first day. You have to be a little crazy. Climbers and long distance paddlers also have to like suffering and pain.(both are common for these sports no cry babies allowed) You also get out of it what you put in it. The more you train the better you get, and specific training is the only thing that will do it. Lastly you must be very educated or very lucky. Split second decisions and expierence will always be any athletes biggest resource.

Well I guess were alittle off the subject here but i wanted everyone to know how great the river miles staff has been!

Yeah...I am intense about everything I do :P...but never over the back of anyone...but intense...uh that is an understatement ::).....however I do like to pass the torch and get folks into things.....none of that "cant talk to you until you have earned your stripes"...in fact I hated the whole elitist vibe around cycling and racing....did a few ultra type events on bikes.......but hated the culture...still love to mountain bike........some day would like to do the leadville..........................speaking of bikiing...we could make the 340 a real challenge...and bike all the way back after the race......wait that has been done....uh...we could bring our bikes with us on the boat...and then pull the boat all the way back to KC after the race on trailers we built and carried with us....uh wait that has been done........I know...we could build our own boat out of trashed materials like perhaps plastic barrels...and still bike back after the race.

....the true heros of the 340.....A-dog and Black Coffee......those dudes are stinkn legends in my book.

Hey Scott... I have been a spectator of this race for 3 years.. Had no Idea that it would fill up so quick... I have signed up for the waiting list for Mens solo, and so has my buddy... I went ahead and signed up as a tandem with him just in case we don't make it on the Solo... but we would both prefer SOLO if possible...

Tandem team name ...... Hello Moose

That many people down a twenty foot wide boat ramp…just think of the colorful language people will learn from me.
Is there a secondary ramp close by up the Kaw or Missouri that could launch a few boats to take the pressure off Kaw Point that morning?  I would not be opposed to putting in an extra mile to join the starting line-up.  Even a clear shoreline with auto access within 50 yards of the river would suffice.

Title: Re: 2010 Roster (340/340 boats)
Post by Scott on 04/05/10 at 16:35:32
There really aren't any options in either direction.  But all of Kaw Point can be used for launching... not just the ramp.  In fact the very tip of the point is perfect with a hard packed gravel entrance to the water.

Even with 340 boats entered we will likely only have about 300 show that morning.  This is only about 45 more boats over last year.

Friends of Kaw Point Park are also looking at ways to help us with some additional launch zones.  And paddlers should do their best to have all gear ready to go when they launch so they can just put in and paddle away without much delay.

There is much crowding at the ramp, and sadly enough there are those still among us who lack manners and breeding.  Two years ago one of these lower sort gave my dear wife a shove to get her out of his way on the ramp.  I didn't see the incident and she only told me of it long after the race.  Too bad, I haven't broken a paddle since 1965.
We should have patience with one another on or about the ramps.  Remember, we may be old and slow like me, or simply tired and thoughtless, but we are all there to have a good time.  Patience, have consideration.  Things that run smoother usually run faster.

The second year of the race I motored past a tandem canoe team that was setting up their evening camp.  The had a nice 3 or 4 person tent, a huge cooler, camp chairs, and a nice fire going.  I don't remember if they finished, but they did look like they were house pullers.

I bet hoses are lighter and take less space.  ;)

Howdy Scott! Just a little tweak for Brett Dufur #1024 listing.

Since my wife signed me up with my credit card, I guess I'm officially sponsored by Katy Trail Bed & Breakfast (www.katytrailbb.com) AND Mighty Mo Canoe Rentals (www.mighty-mo.com).

If you can add any of that it'd be great since we usually fill the B&B up w/ paddlers and rent out a couple boats for the big event.

Looking forward to outdoing my last place finish last year!  :o

A couple of new sponsors to mention.  Thanks to Joe Mann for putting up a COOL custom poker table with the 340 logo on it for the Men's Solo division.  That's going to be amazing.  Hopefully, we can have it on display at the awards ceremony and if you don't win it, you can place an order for one just like it.

Also, Santo Albright, last year's Men's Solo champion, is sponsoring (via his company, Stephenson Electric) a finish line hospitality tent as well as special recognition trophies for first plastic solo boat to land and first stock (non-race stye) aluminum tandem.  Pretty cool.

Don Wilkison is also sponsoring the Men's Solo Pedal Drive class!  This is the 3rd year Don has sponsored a division in the 340.

Thanks to all 3 of these 340 veterans for sponsoring the race so generously.

I'd love to Scott, but this year I elected to do the Neches Wilderness, CR 100, RIo Fest and the Phat Water.  Next year, assuming I survive this year, it's the  South Dakota Challenge, Texas Water Safari and MR 340.  Assuming I live through that, the Yukon is my 2012 goal.  All sort of a glorified geezer quest.  Been touring for years but I did my first ever race last year at 55 and loved it.  Now I'm planning on doing as many as I can before the Osteo Biflex quits working!
